Two things have motivated this ongoing series of images.

One is about the process of screenprinting and in particular a method called posterisation. This is where an image, usually photographic, is separated out into tonal layers that are printed sequentially, one on top of another, in different colours. The image is built out of flat layers to create the illusion of depth, rather like a series of theatre flats on stage.

The other is pure nostalgia. The images that I have chosen to treat in this way are from a family slide collection dating back to the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. They document holidays, weekend outings and other family events. Even when the photographs are simplified through the process of printmaking, the pictures retain a character which is not of this time. Taken to preserve and capture a memory they are beautifully composed, often ‘picturesque’ and represent a world and an attitude towards it, that has now gone forever.

The photographer was my father, now also gone.
